The Hartmut Hoffmann-Berling International Graduate School of Molecular and Cellular Biology (HBIGS) was founded in October 2007. The vision of the Graduate School is to attract the best and brightest doctoral researchers from around the world to pursue doctoral studies at Heidelberg University by offering excellent research opportunities and comprehensive academic and complementary training in a vibrant and stimulating scientific environment.
The focus of the Graduate School on molecular and cellular biology takes into account that molecular and cellular biology provides the conceptual and technological foundation on which most other fields, sub-disciplines and specialized areas of life and biosciences rest - from structural biology to bioinformatics, from molecular medicine to biotechnology, and from immunology to systems biology.
A higher qualification in molecular and cellular biology will, therefore, prepare graduates for leading positions in all areas where in-depth knowledge of biological processes is required - be it in academia, industry or the public sector.

Full scholarships for students
For applicants from Sub-Saharan African countries with an excellent academic record the DRD offers a limited number of DAAD merit scholarships per year.
Scholarships are available for full-time students of
  • the MA in Development Studies (next deadline 15 July 2016, online application platform will be available from mid April 2016 only!)
  • the Master in Public Administration (next deadline 15 July 2016, online application platform will be available from mid April 2016 only!)
  • the MA in Development Management (Bochum Programme, next deadline 31 December 2017)
    (separate online application platform, access and guidelines via "How to apply" section of the Bochum programme or via the course homepage)
  • the different PhD options at the centre (PhD UWC) (next deadline 15 July 2016, online application platform will be available from mid April 2016 only!)
Scholarships include monthly allowances of 650 Euro plus travel allowances for Master candidates and 900 Euro plus travel allowances for PhD candidates. More information about requirements for application and application procedure is provided below.
Requirements for application and application procedure
  • Scholarship applicants are adviced to carefully read about the specific entry requirements and course application procedure of the programme of their choice. The information is available from the respective programmes sections. In addition to programme requirements, all applicants have to meet the following requirements:
  • Applicants should be from Sub-Sahara Africa
  • Applicants should have an outstanding academic record - at least 70% for your last degree
  • Applicants should apply within 6 years of having completed their previous degree
  • The study must have been completed at an internationally recognised university
  • The previous degree (Baccalaureus or Master) should have been an academic discipline which is related to Development Studies or Public Administration
  • South African students are required to have an honours degree in order to be admitted to a Masters degree course. Other students need the equivalent of a 4 year undergraduate degree
  • Applicants must provide evidence of proficiency in English, both written and spoken. This can be TOEFL test or a similar standard test or a letter from an academic institution
  • Work and/or voluntary experience in your field of interest would be a recommendation
  • Women are encouraged to apply
  • South African students are encouraged to apply
  • Applicants must be able to study fulltime at the UWC for the required period.

  • MA applicants will have to write a one page paper about 1 of the following 4 topics:
1 François Bourguignon, a former Chief Economist of the World Bank referred to the "poverty growth inequality triangle": Discuss this comment, critically evaluating the role of inequality in the current study of development in Africa.
2 Write critically on perceptions about governance in Sub Saharan Africa.
3 It has been claimed that climate change could potentially interrupt progress toward a world without hunger. Consider the evidence for this claim and discuss how climate change might impact on food security.
4 Discuss the relationship between social movements and civil society in a specific SSA country of your choice.

  • PhD applicants are asked to also submit a 6 page proposal on the research they would want to undertake for the thesis. This should include their research question, the research methodology and a (provisional) theoretical framework. A list of topics is given in the PhD section.
  • Additional one signed reference (academic) (and one professional if applicable) have to be uploaded to the e-form. Only if referees don´t want you to submit the reference yourself, the reference can be send by the referee directly to info.uwc@drd-sa.org, indicating the applicant's name!
  • Candidates for the Masters Programme in Public Administration (MPA), the MA in Development Studies as well as PhD candidates in the fields of Governance, Public Policy, Public Management or Development Studies can submit their scholarship application without needing to apply for admission at UWC. If they are awarded a scholarship, or if they intend to finance themselves, they may apply for admission through the online application procedure (www.uwc.ac.za).
  • We are unfortunately not able to engage in extended correspondence with applicants.
  • For applicants of the MPA, the MA in Development Studies as well as PhD candidates the closing date for the next intake (2017) for all scholarship applications is 15 July 2016. Applicants will be informed about their applications in August 2016.

Scholarships for a study period in Germany
Apart from full scholarships for participation in one of the above mentioned programmes a number of mobility scholarships for Master students are available each year. These scholarships are aimed at funding a study period in Germany. During such a study period abroad scholarship holders can participate in a Summer School at Ruhr-Univeristy Bochum, complete an internship with a German organization working in the field related to their studies or they can visit Ruhr-Univeristy Bochum during the completion phase of their Master Thesis for intensive supervision periods.
It is not necessary to apply for mobility scholarships before starting your studies. The application procedure for mobility scholarships will instead be announced to participants of the cooperating programmes.

Short term (3 months) research scholarship in German for Post Doc and PhD students from developing countries

FSC invites outstanding Post-Docs, PhD and Master students from both developing and developed countries pursuing a career in academia or development collaboration to apply for one of its offered scholarships.
Applicants should be interested in an interdisciplinary and international (post-) graduate education in food security relevant issues. The scholarships aim at increasing their previously gained scientific knowledge and skills relevant to food security-related issues. Finally, FSC aims at establishing an active, long-lasting collaboration with the supported researchers and their home institutions through an interactive alumni-network. 
All scholars will be selected on a competitive basis and invitations will be sent after the selection process.

Australia Awards Scholarships

Awardees at an Australia Awards Leadership Conference in Canberra, AustraliaAustralia Awards Scholarships are long term development awards administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
They aim to contribute to the long term development needs of Australia's partner countries in line with bilateral and regional agreements.
They provide opportunities for people from developing countries, particularly those countries located in the Indo-Pacific region, to undertake full time undergraduate or postgraduate study at participating Australian universities and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions.
The study and research opportunities provided by Australia Awards Scholarships develop skills and knowledge of individuals to drive change and contribute to the development outcomes of their own country.

Awards benefits

The Awards are offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian higher education institution, including any preparatory training. The following benefits generally apply:
  • Full tuition fees
  • Return air travel—payment of a single return, economy class airfare to and from Australia, via the most direct route
  • Establishment allowance—a once only payment of A$5,000 as a contribution towards accommodation expenses, text books, study materials
  • Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE) – is a fortnightly contribution to basic living expenses paid at a rate determined by the department. From 1 January 2013, CLE payable to awardees is A$30,000 per year.
  • Introductory Academic Program (IAP)—a compulsory 4-6 week program prior to the commencement of formal academic studies covering information on life and study in Australia
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the award (for award holder only)—provided to cover the student's basic medical costs (with the exception of pre-existing conditions)
  • Pre-course English (PCE) fees—if deemed necessary PCE may be available for students for in-country and/or in-Australia training
  • Supplementary Academic Support may be available to ensure a Scholar's academic success or enhance their academic experience
  • Fieldwork (for research awardees and Master by coursework which has a research component where fieldwork is compulsory component)—may be available for eligible research students for one return economy class airfare via the most direct route to their country of citizenship or within Australia.

Award conditions

Applicants who want to accept an Australia Awards Scholarship will need to sign a contract with the Commonwealth of Australia declaring that they will comply with the conditions of the scholarship.
Awardees are required to leave Australia for a minimum of two years after completing their scholarship. Failure to do so will result in the awardee incurring a debt for the total accrued cost of their scholarship.

Allison Sudradjat Prize

The top Australia Award Scholarship recipients from Indonesia and PNG may also be eligible to receive an Allison Sudradjat Prize.

Hadi Soesastro Prize

The prize offers study assistance of up to $25,000 for one male and one female Australia Awards Scholarship recipient.
Recipients from Indonesia who are undertaking high level research and skill development at an Australian University are eligible to receive a Hadi Soesastro Prize.

Master Grants

Master Grants for students from developing countries

Ghent University provides Master Grants to candidates from developing countries who wish to obtain a master’s degree at Ghent University. In 2016 the call will only be open for students already in their first Master year at Ghent University. The scholarship consists of an insurance, an allowance of 1000 euro per month, an installation fee of 500€ and a refund of the yearly tuition fee with a maximum of 105€.

Deadline and decision

Call is open from 1st of February. Deadline: April 15th 2016.
Decisions will be announced half May 2016.

About the Master Grants

Each year, a maximum of 10 scholarships can be awarded.
In 2016, Ghent University will only reward scholarships to students already in their first master year at Ghent University, following a 2-year Master programme taught in English.
The scholarship fee consists of:
  • Allowance of €1000 per month.
  • One-time only installation fee of €500
  • Insurance (health, civil liability, repatriation)
  • Yearly reimbursement of the tuition fee with a maximum of €105
Warning: in case of increased tuition fee for the master's programme, Ghent University will only reimburse the refundable part. Fees vary according to the programme and can be up to €8000 e.g. certain Erasmus Mundus programmes.
Airline ticket and visa costs are not included in the grant.

Selection procedure

Eligibility check

Application files that do not comply with all eligibility criteria or submission requirements, will not be considered for selection.

Selection Committee

The Committee for Development Cooperation makes a selection of the applications based on the recommendations obtained from a working group of this Committee.
The Committee then proceeds to formulate well-founded recommendations to the Executive Committee of Ghent University.

Selection criteria

The recommendations are based on:
  • The qualifications of the applicant for the master grant (this also implies that the chances of overly qualified candidates might increase)
  • There is no strict age limit, altough applicants below 40 years are preferred
  • The significance of the master's programme for the student's country
  • Validation of the knowledge in the student's country
  • The motivation of the applicant.
  • The results of the first semester at Ghent University

ILRI-DAAD PhD scholarships 2016

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is collaborating with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to offer up to eight in region PhD scholarships in 2016 through a co-funding arrangement. 

ILRI through its graduate fellowship program will provide an opportunity for successful candidates from sub-Saharan African countries to undertake quality research for development, access ILRI’s cutting-edge research facilities and receive mentorship from ILRI scientists within the following broad ILRI program areas.

ILRI MSc Research Fellowship – Ethiopia

The outcomes of these research partnerships help people in developing countries keep their farm animals alive and productive, increase and sustain their livestock and farm productivity, find profitable markets for their animal products and reduce the risk of livestock-related diseases. www.ilri.org

Rangeland resources are numerous although ecosystems in pastoral areas require effective management strategies to achieve sustainable productivity.  ILRI’s research project Enhancing the value of ecosystem services in pastoral systems (EVESPS)works with local and national stakeholders to assess available land management practices, model their impacts on water and forage yields, and use potential tradeoffs among them to help identify challenges and opportunities in land management.  Incorporating such analyses into local and watershed-level decision-making could contribute to minimizing negative environmental impacts and enhancing flows of ecosystem services from rangelands.  Furthermore, these analyses will contribute substantially to the knowledge on the benefits supplied by pastoral ecosystems in Africa.

The EVESPS project includes a significant hydrological modeling component, expected to be conducted using existing parameterizations for the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) for Tana River basin in Kenya and the White Volta basin in Burkina Faso. ILRI is offering a research fellowship with the EVESPS project to support and contribute to the hydrological modeling efforts, with primary emphasis on the site in Burkina Faso.
The position: The fellow (MSc student or similar) is expected to contribute directly to the project, and to produce their MSc thesis based on information generated through the project. Specifically, the student selected will be responsible for several important steps in refining existing hydrological model configurations for the study basins. These activities will contribute directly to project analyses and indirectly to land planning processes at local and watershed scales.

Key responsibilities:
  • Use existing hydrological model configurations to conduct initial simulations.
  • With our partners (CGIAR, university, and NGO colleagues), assess and obtain available model initialization datasets likely to improve model performance, as well as available model evaluation datasets likely to improve model performance.
  • Assess model fit in relation to evaluation datasets and initialization datasets.
  • Use sensitivity analysis and other methods to strategically assess and adjust parameter settings.
  • Alter model parameters to reflect changes in land management, specifically modifications to existing water flows and grazing management systems. The changes to management assessed are provided by local, regional, and national stakeholders, and model results will help inform planning processes at both local and watershed scales.
  • Design and carry out a thesis project of the student’s interest that is complementary to the work outlined above.
  • Prepare a report summarizing the outcomes of initialization improvements and evaluation efforts, and analyzing the response of water flows among the various scenarios describing change in land management.
Requirements:
  • Be a current student at MSc (or equivalent degree level) in hydrology, ecology, Earth sciences, natural resources or similar field;
  • Able to use this assignment to complete an academic requirement of the MSc degree;
  • Having completed course work requirements of an MSc programme in one of the above fields before starting work at ILRI is a plus;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of SWAT or other hydrological models, or alternatively, under advisement of a professor or researcher experienced with SWAT or hydrological modeling;
  • A team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Ability to interact effectively in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Desirable  qualifications
  • Previous experience or knowledge on pastoral and agro-pastoral farming and herding in West and East Africa.
  • Previous experience or knowledge on rangeland ecology, forage modeling, soil science, community-based management, and environmental policy analysis.
  • Working or better knowledge of French and Swahili.
Terms of appointment and stipend:
The successful candidate will be supervised jointly by an ILRI scientist and the student’s university supervisor, and will have the opportunity to interact with scientists at other universities, CGIAR centres, and NGOs, to further develop her/his research programme.
ILRI will provide the fellow an allowance of US$1500/month to support personal expenses as well as an end-of-fellowship honorarium of US$2,000 upon timely completion of the fellowship tasks. Additionally, ILRI will meet the costs of research related travel, as well as insurance.

Duration: 5 months, starting between March and April 2016
Location: Ethiopia (Addis Ababa) or remotely from the student’s university (negotiable)
