The Research Training Group invites applications for

• 7 Doctoral Fellowships

starting in April 2015 for 1,5 years (18 months).

Another year (12 months) or even up to 1,5 years (18 months) of funding might be provided, depending on the extension of the funding period for the Training Group through the German Research Council.

The scholarship amounts to € 1,300 per month; additional funding for travel grants etc. will also be available.

The DFG Research Training Group sets out to examine the function of literature in processes of globalization from a broad historical perspective, ranging from antiquity to the present day. Research interests focus on the question of how literature may be both a product and an active generator or producer of the cultural, economic, and political dynamics, collectively described as globalization. Researchers work in close consultation with a group of supervisors whose fields of competence include literature written in English, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and other languages. The study program, including critical theory and theories of globalization, is designed to provide a forum for intense exchange between fellows, professors, and visiting scholars from the fields of both literary studies and social studies. Applications (in English or German) are invited from highly-qualified graduate students. Applicants should have a university degree equivalent to Master level in literature, with a G.P.A. above the average. In exceptional cases, admission is possible on the basis of a B.A. (honours). Their research projects should contribute to the thematic focus of the Research Training Group. Therefor, the outline of the research project should make an explicit connection to the research profile of the group. Projects that include the exploration of earlier historical periods are particularly welcome.

Teaching and discussions will be bilingual. Applicants must therefore have an adequate comprehension level of both English and German, and speak at least one of these languages fluently. Please provide some evidence and/or documentation of your language competence.

Call for applications – PhD Scholarship

Scholarship under the “Stress tolerance rice for Africa and South Asia (STRASA)” project,
funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) Project
AfricaRice leads a project on “Stress tolerance rice for Africa and South Asia (STRASA) project”. STRASA
phase 3 seeks to improve the livelihood of resource‐poor farmers and contribute to solving food
insecurity issues by designing sustainable and climate‐smart high yielding rice varieties. The specific
objectives of the STRASA phase 3 project are (i) research and develop drought‐, submergence‐, salt‐,
iron‐toxicity‐, and cold‐tolerant varieties of rice, (ii) train rice scientists in the target countries to develop improved varieties that can withstand stressful environments and (iii) promote, produce, and deliver the new varieties to farmers in the target countries.
Two PhD fellowships are available to undertake research on salinity and iron toxicity.

Research 1 Salinity
New donors with physiological and genetic mechanisms distinct from those already identified in Pokkali‐
type donors are required to improve salinity tolerance beyond current ranges. Landraces including Oryza
glaberrima have not been well exploited for tolerance to salinity.
 The successful candidate will
 (1)characterize a diverse set of germplasm for physiological traits underlying salinity tolerance to identify
new sources of tolerance for use as donors in breeding and for identification of novel QTLs,
 (2) usewhole‐genome sequencing and iSeq QTL workflows to identify candidate genes for any novel QTLs and
(3) utilize genome sequence information to design perfect markers for selected candidate genes.
The PhD candidate will be hosted at the AfricaRice Senegal Regional Center, St. Louis, Senegal.


Research 2 Iron toxicity
Iron toxicity is a widespread nutrient disorder which affects lowland rice mostly in poorly drained fieldswhere reduced iron becomes available at levels exceeding plant’s requirements. Different strategies are employed by plants to avoid iron toxicity. However the lack of a clear understanding of genetic and molecular factors governing iron‐toxicity tolerance mechanisms seriously limits breeding efficiency. The PhD candidate will investigate physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying iron toxicity tolerance in rice and identify traits associated with tolerance that could be useful in breeding. Results from this PhD research are expected to elucidate tolerance mechanisms and guide more precise varietal selection which could significantly advance the development of rice varieties tolerant to iron‐toxicity.
The PhD candidate will be hosted at AfricaRice station in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania but may be required to conduct experimental trials in other countries involved in iron toxicity tolerance screening

The Joachim Herz scholarships provide doctoral candidates with outstanding conditions in which to conduct scientific research. The scholarships ensure doctoral candidates considerable financial leeway and consist of the following elements:

• Basic allowance: EUR 1,800 (monthly for 3 years)

• Equipment and language courses: EUR 5,000 (if required)

• Allowance to enable the recipient to take part in international conferences and research semesters and conduct work in research labs: EUR 9,000 (for three years)

• Allowance to organize a joint event in cooperation with other fellowship recipients of the Joachim Herz Foundation in the second or third year of their doctoral studies: up to a total EUR 12,000

OeAD Ernst Mach Grant

Ernst Mach Grant

The Ernst Mach Grants are named after the famous Austrian physicist and philosopher Ernst Mach (1838-1916). The grant program is financed by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy (BMWFW).  Students and young researchers from foreign universities are invited to apply for this grant to come to Austria for a research or a study stay. Every year a board of representatives of the Austrian Ministry awards the Ernst Mach Grants based on the results of an expert examination procedure. Age limit for this grant program is 35 years at the time of the application

Target groups

The "Ernst Mach grant worldwide" is open to

• postgraduates pursuing a doctoral/PhD program outside Austria,

The "Ernst Mach Grant for studying at an Austrian University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule)" is open to:

AIMS-South Africa is seeking applicants for Postdoctoral Fellowships in the area of mathematical finance and computational algebra. Fellowships are tenable for two years, contingent on satisfactory progess, and could be extended for a third year. Fellowships are immediately available and the value of the award ranges between R200 – R240k per annum, taxfree, subject to qualification and experience.

The Dan David Prize awards scholarships to registered doctoral and post-doctoral researchers, studying at recognized universities throughout the world, doing research in one of the selected fields for the year in which the application is being made, and whose research has been approved.

The Dan David Prize laureates annually donate twenty scholarships of US$15,000 each to outstanding doctoral and postdoctoral students of exceptional promise in the chosen fields for the current year. Ten scholarships are awarded to doctoral and post-doctoral students at universities throughout the world and ten scholarships at Tel Aviv University.

The Dan David Prize and scholarships are granted according to merit, without discrimination based on gender, race, religion, nationality, or political affiliation.

Norwegian government scholarships

The Norwegian government provides scholarships for students from developing countries and countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia through the Quota Scheme.

The objective of the scheme is to promote the internationalisation of higher education. Currently, the scheme provides full scholarships for a total of 1 100 students, of which 800 are from developing countries and 300 from Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Each year universities and university colleges in Norway are allocated a certain number of quota students. The scheme normally includes courses taught in English at Master’s and PhD level, in addition to certain professional degrees.

The Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund (see link in right coloumn) is responsible for managing the financial support provided for the Quota students. Each student receives the same amount of money as a Norwegian student would do in an equivalent educational programme. About 30 per cent of the amount is given as a grant and 70 per cent as a loan. However, the loan portion may be waived when the student returns to his/her home country after completing the course of study. Students who stay in Norway after finishing their studies or take up residence in another country than their home country must repay their loan. Normally, the financial support given will not exceed a time span of four years for one definite study plan or a combination of two programmes. Part-time studies are not supported.
