China Scholarship Council(hereinafter referred to as CSC), entrusted by the ministry of Education of China, is responsible for the enrollment and administration of Chinese Government Scholarship Programs. Ghent University Master Grants

Master Grants for students from developing countries

Ghent University provides Master Grants to candidates from developing countries who wish to obtain a master’s degree at Ghent University. They are awarded for the duration of the studies with a maximum of 2 years. In case of a two-year-programme the scholarship will only be paid for the full term if the student successfully completes the first year of the programme. The scholarship consists of an insurance, an allowance of 1000 euro per month, an installation fee of 500€ and a refund of the yearly tuition fee with a maximum of 105€.

There are different procedures according to what kind of applicant you are. The procedures are explained below.

The selection date is the 28th of May 2015. Results will be communicated in the first week of june 2015.

Important information: every student needs to have academic admission before he/she can apply for the Master Grants. Detailed information below sorted by category.

About the Master Grants

Each year, a maximum of 10 scholarships can be awarded.

The master scholarships are awarded for the duration of the studies, aiming at the delivery of a Ghent University diploma after max. 2 years of study. The scholarship is paid for the total duration of the studies.

In case of a 2-year study programme, the 2nd year will be paid upon successful completion of 60 credits.

The scholarship fee consists of:

Allowance of €1000 per month.
One-time only installation fee of €500
Insurance (health, civil liability, repatriation)
Yearly reimbursement of the tuition fee with a maximum of €105

Warning: in case of increased tuition fee for the master's programme, Ghent University will only reimburse the refundable part. Fees vary according to the programme and can be up to €8000 e.g. certain Erasmus Mundus programmes.

Airline ticket and visa costs are not included in the grant.

Applicants who already received a Master Grant in the past, are not eligible.

You have to have a bachelor degree when you submit your application.

Master programme:

Your country is on the Master Grants country list(PDF)? You can apply for the Master Grant. If not, you will not be eligible.

Language and proficiency

You should have a very good command of the English language. Check the language requirements.

Selection procedure

Eligibility check

Application files that do not comply with all eligibility criteria or submission requirements, will not be considered for selection.

Selection Committee

The Council for Development Cooperation (COS or Commissie Ontwikkelingssamenwerking) makes a selection of the applications based in part on the recommendations obtained from a working group of this Council.

The Council then proceeds to formulate well-founded recommendations to the Executive Committee of Ghent University.

Selection criteria

The recommendations are based on:

The qualifications of the applicant for the master grant (this also implies that the chances of overly qualified candidates might increase).
Students who successfully follow the first year of a Master Grant programme at Ghent University may have a higher chance of selection.
There is no strict age limit, altough applicants below 40 years are preferred.
The significance of the master's programme for the student's country.
Validation of the knowledge in the student's country.
The student's nationality (see nationality).
The motivation of the applicant.
IMPORTANT selection criterium: Proof of relation with UGent: Demonstrate that the university of your studies, your current or future employer has a relation with Ghent University (former or current). For example: staff exchange, research projects, publications, etc.

For Ghent University it's important that for this type of grants, the student will return to his/her home country upon their study and add to the UGent international network in developing countries. Therefore as a prerequisite we ask that you can demonstrate that the university of your studies, your current or your future employer already has a former or current relation with UGent. It's an asset if this is in the field of your study, but if there's already collaboration in another field, that's also good.

In view of the extremely high number of Master Grant applications we normally receive, your application will not be eligible if there's no relation at all. It's up to the applicant to add documents or letters that support this institutional link.

STEP 1:

Send an e-mail to admission@UGent.be with the following information:

IMPORTANT: The deadline for application for admission(complete file) is 24th December 2014.

STEP 2:

You've got officially admitted? The student administration will forward all the names of the admitted applicants to the Development Cooperation Office on the 15th of March 2015.

STEP 3:

On the 16th of March 2015 you will get an invitation by e-mail to apply online by the UGent Master Grant application tool.The deadline will be 15th of April 2015. All your documents (diploma, admission letter, etc.) will be automatically uploaded into the application tool. You'll need to write a motivation and future plans, give 2 references and proof that the university of your studies or your current or future employer has a relationship with Ghent University. For example: staff exchange, research projects, publications, etc. Note that questions about this will not be answered. If you do not know this, please go to the administration office of your university or employment and ask them to guide you.

II. Application for new students applying for List B of Master programmes

Masters Scholarships in Development 2015

AFD - PSIA Student Scholarships in Development 2015
Call for Applications

Based on a special partnership between the Paris School of International Affairs of Sciences Po (PSIA) and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), multiple scholarships ranging from partial to full tuition fee grants will be offered every year to incoming students in the Development programs of PSIA. The AFD is the main implementing agency for France’s official development assistance to developing countries and overseas territories.

Eligibility to apply
 The AFD-PSIA Scholarship is dedicated to nationals of African countries only. Priority will be given to students coming from the following countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Liberia, Niger, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
 Applicants must have already submitted a full application to the Paris School of International Affairs of Sciences Po (PSIA) for the 2015 intake through the Sciences Po Admissions Portal (including all supporting documents and references) and must have applied to one of the following programs in Development:

 PSIA’s Master in Development Practice (one-year program)
 PSIA’s Master in International Development (two-year program)

Please note that only applicants successfully admitted to PSIA will be considered for the scholarship.
 Students applying to a dual degree program are not eligible.
Scholarship Conditions
 Multiple scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis to the best candidates on the basis of
their academic record and their project at Sciences Po.
 In principle, the AFD-PSIA Scholarship goes towards covering tuition fees.
 The AFD-PSIA scholarship is offered for the entire length of study at PSIA on condition of sufficient academic performance (top 50% of the class). Students who do not meet this requirement will have their scholarship withdrawn.
 Master in Development Practice: in principle, the scholarship is offered for one year. Students
enrolled on this program must show sufficient academic performance during the first semester or
their scholarship will be withdrawn in the second semester.
 Master in International Development: in principle, the scholarship is offered for both years of
study. Students enrolled on this program must show sufficient academic performance over the
course of the first year or their scholarship will be withdrawn in the second year.
 The scholarship is dependent on the awardees completing their course of study at PSIA. A change in Master will lead to the withdrawal of the scholarship.
 Please note that the scholarship offer is for students beginning their studies in September 2015 and
may not be deferred.

Call for PhD Candidate on Woody invasive alien species in Ethiopia

Call for PhD Candidate

Woody invasive alien species in Ethiopia: assessing their impacts on ecosystem services and rural livelihoods on watershed level Background: CABI Switzerland, in collaboration with Swiss, Ethiopian, Kenyan, Tanzanian and South African research institutions, is implementing a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC). This project aims to help mitigating the effects of woody invasive alien species (IAS) on biodiversity, ecosystem services (ES) and human well-being in selected study areas in Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania. To achieve this goal, we will generate and share knowledge on invasion processes and on context-dependent effects of woody IAS. Additionally, we will elaborate sustainable control measures and develop and document Sustainable Land Management (SLM) strategies that mitigate the negative effects of woody IAS in Eastern Africa.

PhD Position: Within this project, an exciting PhD position is available at the Water & Land Resource Centre (WLRC; http://www.wlrc-eth.org). The PhD aims to assess and understand effects of woody IAS on ecosystem services within the watershed, and on the ability of competing agro-pastoral and pastoral communities to secure access to grazing land and water through adequate watershed and conflict management. Specific goals of the study include: (1) the assessment and mapping of the spatial extent of IAS distribution; (2) the assessment ofnon-monetary and monetary impacts on biodiversity, ES and rural livelihoods. Existing woody IAS distribution data of Gabi Rasu (Afar region) will be updated with recent Landsat 8 and field data, and used for training and validation of models integrating existing digital elevation models, soil type data, hydrologic network data, census data, livelihood data, data on pastoral migration pattern, climate data and biodiversity hotspot data. A modelling approach based on the identification and assessment of functional landscape units will be selected.

The PhD candidate will be based at WLRC in Addis Abeba and registered at Haramaya University

Required competences

 Master in natural science or related fields, preferably with a background in GIS or remote sensing

 Excellent skills in geospatial modelling and/or remote sensing

Georg Forster Research Award

The Georg Forster Research Award is granted in recognition of a researcher's entire achievements to date to academics of all disciplines whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and beyond and who are expected to continue developing research-based solutions to the specific challenges facing transition and developing countries.

Nominees must be nationals of a developing or transition country (excluding People's Republic of China and India; cf. detailed list of countrieshttp://www.humboldt-foundation.de/pls/web/wt_show.text_page?p_text_id=1513). Furthermore, at the time of nomination, they must have had their main residence and place of work in one of these countries for at least five years.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation particularly encourages the nomination of qualified female researchers.

The award amount totals EUR 60,000. In Germany, research awards are generally exempt from income tax under German tax law.

In addition, award winners are invited to conduct a research project of their own choosing in Germany in close collaboration with a specialist colleague. To support the collaboration, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation may grant additional funding of up to EUR 25,000, particularly for participating in scientific conferences, additional material resources, e.g., specialist literature and scientific equipment for the nominee’s own institute, as well as for involving junior researchers.

An established academic employed by a university or research institution in Germany must take the initiative to nominate a candidate for the Georg Forster Research Award. Nominations may also be initiated by award winners of the Humboldt Foundation working abroad, provided that the nomination is made jointly with a colleague working in Germany. Self-nomination is not possible.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is granting up to four Georg Forster Research Awards annually.

The deadline for nominations is 15 January of each year; the selection meeting is scheduled for summer.

PhD student on the subject of Data Management for Big Data Analytics.

Job description

A fully funded PhD position is available to work under the direction of prof. S. Manegold on data management technology for big data analytics. The position is funded by the PROMIMOOC --- Process Mining for Multi-objective Online Control --- project, supported by the Data Science program “challenging Big Data” of the Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).

Research topics for the candidate include data models and technologies to integrate the various data sources, including numerous types of sensors that provide numerical as well as image data, as well as high-performance, scalable, distributed data management technologies to support big data analytics. We strongly favour research that can be disseminated through the open-source channels, e.g., as part of our open-source columnar analytical DBMS MonetDB.

The preferred starting date is 1 January 2015, or earlier.

Requirements:

Candidates are required to have a Master’s degree in computer science (or a five year diploma). Specialization in software engineering, data management, data mining, machine learning or distributed systems, is a pre-requisite. Preferable qualifications for candidates include proven research talent, system programming skills (C, Java), and practical experience in machine learning and/or database technology, as well as an excellent command of English, and good academic writing and presentation skills.

Terms and conditions:

The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). The gross monthly salary, for a PhD student on a full time basis, is €2,057 during the first year and increases to €2,636 over the four year period. Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.33%. CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling and help with housing for expat employees.

An internship at one of the partnering database research labs world-wide is considered part of the PhD track for qualified candidates.
