Malmö University Master's Scholarships

Malmö University offers talented international students a scholarship which covers between 75 and 100 percent of the tuition fee. 

APPLICATION ROUND OPEN

The Malmö University Master's Scholarship (MUMS) is for students who

• are citizens of a country outside the European Economic Area/Switzerland,
• have applied for an English-taught Master's programme at Malmö University through universityadmissions.se, and,
• have ranked a programme at Malmö University as first priority in their application for studies.

There are up to 30 scholarships available, each providing a 75 to 100 percent reduction of the programme's tuition fee. Scholarships will be distributed on a yearly basis and are awarded on academic merit and motivation. Students studying two-year programmes will retain the scholarship if they successfully complete the first year of study and continue to meet the progression criteria.

How are the scholarships funded?

The scholarships are funded by the Swedish Government and are administered locally by Malmö University. All Swedish universities receive scholarship funds from the Government.

Ireland Government Scholarship

Scholarship by Government of Ireland 

Each year Government of Ireland awards postgraduate scholarship for scholars from any country. Scholarship is awarded for qualified Research Master’s and Doctoral candidates pursuing or intending to pursue full-time research in any discipline, based in an Irish HEI. The duration of funding depends on the type of degree being pursued and the date of first registration.

Programmes Offered: Scholarship are offered in all subjects available in university.

Course Level: Postgraduate

Eligibility: Scholars must fulfill the following criteria:

• Scholars must be full-time students affiliated with an eligible HEI in Ireland.
• must not be a permanent member of staff in an HEI or in a non-Irish based research body or HEI.
• must have a first class or upper second-class honours primary degree, or  the equivalent4. If examination results are not known at the time of application, the Council may make a provisional offer of a Scholarship on condition that the Scholar’s undergraduate degree result is a first class- or upper second-class honours, or the equivalent. Masters degree results may be considered to take precedence over the results of the primary degree. The Council decision on these matters is final;
• must not have applied more than once to the Scheme (including strategic partner themes within the Scheme). This includes applications since 2009 to the EMBARK scheme previously run by the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET), and the Government of Ireland Scholarship Scheme previously run by the Irish Council for Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS).
• be a new entrant to the degree for which they are to receive Council funding and have been formally accepted by the relevant department/school by, at the latest, 1st October 2015;
• fulfill the criteria in 4.4 if already registered and part of the degree has been completed.
• In the case of Research Masters Scholarships, not currently holding or having previously held a Council Postgraduate Scholarship;
• Doctoral Degree Scholarships, not currently holding or having previously held any Council Postgraduate Scholarship other than those which would enable them to obtain a Research Masters Degree.
• Scholars from any country may hold a Council Postgraduate Scholarship. However, Scholars must:
• maintain her/his principal residence in Ireland (as defined) during the period of the Scholarship;
• satisfy the State’s regulations on immigration and have the support of their HEI with respect to these regulations and requirements if not a national of a member state of the European Union (EU).

Benefit:

• The total value of the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship, Enterprise Partnership Scheme Postgraduate Scholarship and all strategic funding partner scholarships, will be up to a maximum of €24,000 in any approved year and will consist of the following:
• A maintenance award of €16,000 per annum within the Funding Term;
• Contribution to fees, including non-EU scholarship fees, paid to the HEI up to a maximum of €5,750. Any differential must be paid by the Scholar and/or HEI per annum. MBA Scholarship

MBA Scholarship for Outstanding International Students (Commencing)

The UTS Business School offers two (2) scholarships annually to high achieving international postgraduate students commencing the UTS Master of Business Administration (MBA) program.

Usually one (1) new Recipient will be awarded in Autumn semester, and one (1) Recipient in Spring semester.

Value and duration

Valued at A$5,000, which will be credited towards the recipient's second semester tuition fees.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for the Scholarship, an applicant must meet all of the following criteria:

• Must be an International student (neither an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen nor permanent resident of Australia); and
• Must have completed a UTS recognised degree and met the UTS MBA entry requirements; and
• Must be commencing the UTS Master of Business Administration (MBA) program (course code C04018) in the semester immediately following the Scholarship selection ; and
• Have achieved a minimum academic achievement of Distinction average (75%) in their qualification used as a basis for admission to the MBA.

UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme

What is it about?

Reinforcing its belief in “people building the next era”, the Government of Japan offers 20 fellowships per year, for the twelfth consecutive year, to be awarded to deserving candidates from developing countries, especially the least developed countries (LDCs), who are eager to undertake research on one or more of the topics listed below. The aim of the fellowships is to support innovative and imaginative post-graduate research in four areas of development of particular interest to UNESCO.

UNESCO designed the project “UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships Programme” (UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme) in the framework of the Japanese Funds-in-Trust for the Capacity-Building of Human Resources which was established in November 2000 by the Government of Japan to enable UNESCO to give impetus to research in four areas under UNESCO’s Priority Programme Areas. 

Objective of the Programme

The UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships Programme (UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme) funded under the Japanese Funds-in-Trust for the capacity-building of Human Resources will aim, in particular, to impact on capacity-building and research activities in the following areas:

• Environment (with particular emphasis on water sciences);
• Intercultural Dialogue;
• Information and Communication Technologies; and
• Peaceful conflict resolution.

 No other research topics will be considered.

DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION REGARDING THE RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH UNDERTAKEN UNDER THIS PROGRAMME 

Once the Fellowship has expired, the beneficiaries will be encouraged to disseminate the results of their research. No prior approval of UNESCO will be required for publication of a scholarly paper resulting from research done while benefiting from the UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme. However, the Fellow will be asked to acknowledge UNESCO, UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme and the Government of Japan in their paper as having provided support for the Fellowship and the Fellow will be required to send a copy of the report and/or printed article to the Organization for information. It should be emphasized that UNESCO has no obligation to publish the scholarly papers and no allowance will be provided for that purpose. 

Selected beneficiaries will be required to submit an interim and a final report describing the results of the research undertaken. Fellows will be required to send UNESCO a one-page summary with their report that will  be disseminated widely by UNESCO.

Eligibility and Conditions for Applications

Applicants, a maximum of TWO from each applying National Commission, must meet the following general criteria:

1.  Candidates under this Programme must be post-graduate researchers, already holding either an M.A. or M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) and wishing to pursue research work abroad (preferably in their own region) with a view to enhancing knowledge in one of the four specific fields mentioned in paragraph D.1 below. Thus, those who are in the process of completing their Master’s degree must have completed it PRIOR to taking up their Fellowship.
2. Candidates must be persons of high intellectual promise who may be expected to make significant contributions to their country on return.
3. Candidates must be no more than 40 years of age. Thus, applicants born before 1 January 1975 will not be considered under the Programme.
4. The selected Fellow must carry out the research under the auspices of an academic supervisor in a host institution. Confirmation of acceptance from the academic supervisor is imperative.
5. Priority attention will be given to: * Women candidatures  * Candidates from least developed countries (LDCs)  * African researchers
6. Candidates must be proficient in reading and writing the language of instruction in the proposed country of study/research.

University Graduate Fellowship

University Graduate Fellowship (UGF)

Award Description:

The University Graduate Fellowship (UGF) is a merit-based scholarship that is awarded to graduate students engaged in full-time study or research in a thesis-based program. Incoming students are automatically considered for University Graduate Fellowship  funding upon consideration for admission. Current students, enrolled in an Okanagan graduate degree program, must apply annually for University Graduate Fellowship funding.

Annual Value: awarded in units of $3,000 or $6,000; multiple units may be awarded to one student.
Deadline: January 30, 2015 by 4:00pm.

Eligibility:

Academic Standing:

• Students must have obtained a GPA of first-class standing in each of the last two completed years of full-time study (or full-time equivalent) to be eligible to receive funding.
• For UBC courses, first-class standing is 80% and higher. Questions regarding GPA calculations can be directed to the College of Graduate Studies.

Number of Months of Study:

• Master’s students must have completed, as of December 31, 2014 no more than 24 months of study in the master’s program for which they are requesting funding.
• PhD students must have completed, as of December 31, 2014 no more than 48 months of study in the doctoral program for which they are requesting funding.

Citizenship:

• Domestic and international students are eligible to apply.

Application Procedures:

All applicants are to submit their application materials directly to the College of Graduate Studies.

• Important note: current master’s students that submitted a Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s Program application (CGSM) for the 2014 competition, will be automatically considered for UGF funding; no additional application is required. 
• NSERC or SSHRC doctoral applicants only: doctoral students that submitted an application for NSERC or SSHRC funding during the 2014 competition will be automatically considered for UGF funding. These students are able to update their NSERC or SSHRC application by submitting a UGF form by the UGF deadline. New reference letters are not required.
• CIHR doctoral applicants must complete a UGF application form to be considered for UGF funding. The College of Graduate Studies does not have access to CIHR doctoral applications.
• Current graduate students that did not apply to one of the three federal granting agencies are encouraged to complete a UGF application by the annual deadline date.
• Incoming students of the May 2015, September 2015 and January 2016 intakes will be automatically considered for UGF funding upon consideration for admission. No additional application is needed for incoming students. Incoming students are not able to update or make changes to their admission application for the purpose of this scholarship. Important note: UGFs are non-renewable; therefore, incoming students will have to apply the following competition year to be considered for continued funding.

Nomination Procedures:

UGF award funding is allocated to graduate programs annually. Graduate programs will review and evaluate each application. Graduate programs will notify the College of Graduate Studies which students have been nominated to receive a UGF.

Graduate programs may provide nominations to the College of Graduate Studies on an on-going basis as nominations are determined. Graduate programs may allocate the awards over the course of two or more rounds, for example:

• Round one: offers are made to the top-ranked student(s), including incoming students from the May and September admission periods.  
• Round two: offers are made to the top-ranked student(s), including incoming students from the January admission period. If further funding is available, graduate programs may offer additional funding to students that received award offers previously (i.e. Top-ups).

A maximum of $15,000 may be awarded to a student that externally funded (i.e. a Tri-Council award holder). There is no maximum for students that do not have external funding.

Conditions Pertaining to Satisfactory Progress:

• Award holders must maintain satisfactory progress in their program of study and remain registered as a full-time student for each term of the scholarship payment.
• If the College of Graduate Studies is notified of a student’s unsatisfactory progress, the College of Graduate Studies reserves the right to cancel a UGF award.

Conditions Pertaining to Deferrals:

• Students are able to defer a UGF provided it is awarded within the same funding year (prior to March 31). Please see the following table:

 **A student may be granted special permission to defer to May if the nominating program permits. In this case, the nominating program must agree to maintain the financial commitment to the student for the following funding year.

Conditions Pertaining to a Leave of Absence:

• If an award holder pursues an approved leave of absence, upon permission from the nominating program, the student may be granted permission to take up the award upon his/her return to studies.  The nominating program must agree to maintain the financial commitment to the student for the following year. 
• A student may only defer his/her award for a maximum of one year from the initial academic term when it was originally awarded.
• If the leave of absence is granted after the student has received a portion of the scholarship, only the remaining amount that has yet to be paid to the student can be considered for deferment.
• Students on a leave of absence are not permitted to take-up the award while on leave.

Conditions Pertaining to Withdrawals:

• If an award holder withdraws from the program that nominated them for the scholarship, the funding received during the term for which the withdrawal is processed, will be recovered by the College of Graduate Studies and returned to the nominating program for further allocation.

Conditions Pertaining to Transferring to Another Area of Study: 

• If an award holder “transfers” out of the program that nominated them for the award (i.e. from one unit within IGS to another unit within IGS), the student may retain the full scholarship payment only if both programs are in agreement.
• Note: the recipient program could agree to “repay” the scholarship allocation to the “source” program.

Conditions Pertaining to Program Completion: 

• If an award holder completes the requirements of his/her program prior to receiving the full scholarship payment, the award holder will receive the remaining scholarship payment prior to the closing of his/her program.

Project: Dynamic Drivers of Disease in Africa: Ecosystems, livestock/wildlife, health and wellbeing

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI, www.ilri.org) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development. Part of the CGIAR Consortium (www.cgiar.org).

The position: The MSc student will implement a project to determine the main reservoirs of West Nile virus in Tana River district, Kenya. Key activities will include field surveys to collect samples, development and optimization of diagnostic tools required for serological/molecular screening of the samples and statistical analysis of the data collected. The student is expected to use this assignment to produce a thesis, project report or a paper that can satisfy an academic requirement for an MSc degree.

Key responsibilities:

• Review relevant and recent literature on West Nile virus, with special focus on East Africa and Kenya
• Work with his/her ILRI and university supervisors to develop a protocol for West Nile virus detection in birds
• Contribute in devising survey methods adapted to the local field context in order to collect data
• Travel to the field to test the survey instruments, take part in ringing of birds, collect data samples
• Analyze the samples using PCR and serology
• Conduct statistical analysis using quantitative analysis tools (Stata or R)
• Write up research results in a format suitable for publication as an MSc Thesis or university field report, and possibly a case study article or a scientific journal article.

Requirements:

• Be a current student at MSc (or equivalent degree level) in veterinary sciences, public health, microbiology or biology;
• Should have completed course work requirements of an MSc programme in one of the above fields;
• Demonstrated knowledge of using statistical tools and software for research, alternatively, genuine interest to learn about using statistical packages a plus;
• Demonstrated skill of using PCR;
• A team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
• Ability to interact effectively in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Terms of appointment and stipend:

The successful candidate will be supervised jointly by a scientist at ILRI and a university supervisor at the college where the student is registered. While at ILRI, he/she will interact with other ILRI scientists and research technicians to further develop his/her research career. The student is expected to cater for their own accommodation and ILRI will provide an allowance of US$ 500/month to support personal expenses. Additionally, ILRI will meet the costs of research related travel, as well as insurance.
