NASF Scholarships

NASF's educational foundation remains committed to helping undergraduate and graduate students interested in studying chemical engineering, material science or engineering, mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, environmental engineering or chemistry.

Scholarships to college juniors, seniors and graduate students are offered in the amount of $1,500. Candidates must demonstrate academic achievement and involvement in extracurricular activities. Awards will be given for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Deadline

Applications must be received by December 9, 2015. Scholarship recipients will be notified by December 31, 2015. 

Getting Started 

What are the qualifications for interested applicants?

 • The scholarship award is available to both undergraduates and graduates. • Undergraduate applicants must be junior standing or above when applying and must be of senior standing for the 2015-2016 academic year.

 • Undergraduate and graduate students must be studying in chemical engineering, material science or engineering, mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, environmental engineering, or chemistry. • The applicant must be attending an accredited college.

• There are no geographic limitations. Both national and international applicants are urged to apply. What is the amount of the award? Undergraduate and Graduate awards are $1,500.00 USD. What is the deadline, and when will the winners be notified? The deadline for submitting applications is December 9, 2015. The AESF Foundation will notify the award winners by December 31, 2015. Can a scholarship holder reapply for a second year (time)? Yes, a previous award winner is permitted to apply for a second year (time).

Can an undergraduate scholarship award winner of two years reapply for a graduate scholarship?

 Yes, an undergraduate winner can reapply as a graduate student. Is financial need a factor? No, the Scholarship Board does not base their decision on financial need. Is there a minimum GPA requirement? Yes, for undergraduate applicant, GPA should be 3.0 or above; for graduate applicant, GPA should be 3.3 or above. Does the student receive the money, or does it go directly to the school? 

The AESF Foundation will send awards directly to the college or university, to be credited to the recipient’s account. Does receiving an award affect a student’s scholarship? No, college and university departments are requested not to reduce federal, state or institutional support for students who receive AESF Foundation Scholarships.

The Application 

Where can an applicant obtain an application? 

The scholarship application form is downloadable from NASF.org/scholarship. What items does an applicant need to include in an application?

• A statement describing the applicant’s career objective and an intended plan of study and/or research in plating and surface finishing science and engineering (Limit: 2 typed pages). 

• A resume detailing the applicant’s academic achievements (Limit: 2 typed pages). 

• Two recommendation letters from professors and, if working in a company, employers. Note that one letter must be from an academic advisor. • An official copy of the most recent undergraduate or graduate transcript (to be sealed by the academic institution where the applicant attends). 

Please note: 

All documents must be in English or have an English translation attached. How will an application be judged? Applicants are judged on the four major factors: 

(1) academic record, (2) personal statement, (3) working experience, and (4) extracurricular activities. 

Note that if an applicant proposes a research project, make sure to clearly state the project objective, approach, and anticipated results. Where should an application package be submitted? THE MASTERCARD FOUNDATION SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The MasterCard Foundation has partnered with Michigan State University to provide full tuition scholarships to undergraduate and masters students from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Students who have demonstrated academic talent, are economically disadvantaged and have a personal commitment to give back to their countries are invited to apply for these scholarships.

Through financial, academic, social and post-graduation support, The Scholars Program will ensure that young people are equipped with the skills and competencies needed to spur economic growth and social development in their respective countries of origin.

GRADUATE STUDENT ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION CRITERIA

The program is open to residents and citizens of Sub-Saharan African countries. Students must be first-time applicants to MSU. Transfer students are not eligible for the program.

• Prior completion of a Bachelors Degree from an African University with academic achievements suggesting continued academic success as a graduate student.
• Strong commitment to a professional path in line with an area of study that can positively impact Africa.
• An interest in and capacity for give-back, evidenced by commitment and engagement on campus, in professional pursuits and/or community.
• Manifest ethical behavior and strong character essential to joining The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Network.
• Ability to deal with change, uncertainty, and adversity, as well as interest in other countries and cultures, necessary to succeed as a student overseas and represent one's home country
• Significant financial need and/or from lowest income bracket in country of origin

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. In order to apply for the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at Michigan State University, you MUST first apply to the desired masters program through the department that hosts your program and thereafter be NOMINATED for a MasterCard Foundation Scholarship by a faculty member therein. Only students who have been admitted to on-campus Masters Programs are eligible for this scholarship. A list of graduate programs is available via the following website: grad.msu.edu/department.
   IMPORTANT: Please save your Applicant ID and password during the MSU application process, as you will need your ID to complete the MCF Scholarship Application.
2. Make arrangements to take an English Proficiency Exam (TOEFL or IELTS), and any other examinations (for example GRE, GMAT) which the department or program to which you are applying requires.STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO TAKE THESE EXAMS NO LATER THAN EARLY-DECEMBER 2015 IN ORDER FOR MSU TO RECEIVE SCORES PROMPTLY.
3. Ensure that the department receives all required supporting documents and official test scores by the due date. Each department sets its own criteria for admission. Read the department's website carefully and then follow the department's instructions for graduate admission. Make arrangements to send all required official academic documents, letters of support, official test scores, etc. as indicated by the department and on the Application for Graduate Admission.
   Only students admitted to Michigan State University will be considered for this scholarship. You should communicate with the appropriate graduate department regarding the status of your application.
4. Complete the graduate student scholarship application and SEND IT TO YOUR GRADUATE DEPARTMENT to arrive by the due date. If submitting a hand-written scholarship application, ensure the document is clearly legible.
5. Provide a copy of the MCF RECOMMENDATION FORM to an appropriate individual per the form instructions. Have your recommender complete this form and email it as an attachment to mcfs@msu.edu no later than the due date.

17 PhD Positions EarthShape: Earth Surface Shaping by Biota. A German-Chilean Priority Program in the Chilean Coast Range The new German Priority Program (Schwerpunktprogramm der DFG) 1803 "EarthShape - Earth Surface Shaping by Biota" will explore how biologic processes form soil, influence topography, and thereby shape the Earth surface. You will work in a consortium of 13 interdisciplinary projects comprising 17 new PhD positions and 3 Postdocs that encompass the fields Geology, Ecology, Soil Sciences, Geography, Microbiology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry. EarthShape research will be conducted at four study sites within in the Chilean Coastal Range that features one of Earth's most spectacular vegetation gradients and is controlled by climate ranging from hyper-arid to humid temperate. It is a natural laboratory to study how biology and topography interact. You will be trained in interdisciplinary methods and conduct joint field work and training workshops. The program is coordinated by Todd Ehlers (todd.ehlers@uni-tuebingen.de) and Friedhelm von Blanckenburg (fvb@gfz-potsdam.de). Master’s Scholarships for International Students

Program overview

The purpose of this program is to promote academic excellence by offering scholarships to foreign students who are citizens of an African or European country (other than France*) and are admitted to a master’s program at Université Laval.

This scholarship of $7,000 per year is renewable once, subject to compliance with the faculty’s criteria of excellence and upon the research director’s recommendation and faculty approval.

Criteria of excellence

The Registrar’s Office considers the average available when the application is reviewed.

Achieve a score of 14/20 or better or the equivalent of a “mention bien” on the diploma required for admission.	Scholarships are automatically1 awarded to candidates admitted to a master’s program. List of eligible programs to come
11/20 to 13/20 average	Candidates are eligible, but scholarships are subject to faculty decision.

1Participating faculties can determine a fixed number of scholarships to be awarded. Please refer to the person in charge of this program at your faculty to get more information. 

Eligibility conditions
 

• At the deadline indicated below, must have submitted a complete application package* at Université Laval in an eligible first master’s program and have been accepted in this program. (list of programs)
   
• You are a foreign student who is a citizen of an African or European country other than France.*
   
• You graduated from a public university accredited by the ministry of higher education in your country of origin. For private institutions, eligibility is determined when the file is reviewed.
   
• You are registered full time for the two first semesters in the program of study for which the scholarship was granted (winter 2015 and summer 2015).

*Please see the admission requirements.

*French citizens already benefit from a supplemental tuition fee exemption under the MEESR policy entitling them to pay the same tuition fees as Québec students.

Please note that master’s scholarships for international students will not be available for study programs followed exclusively outside Quebec.

Deadline and Submission Guidelines

There is no form to complete for master’s level scholarships. Recipients are selected using information from admission applications received by Université Laval. To be considered, candidates must apply for admission by September 15, 2014. To be considered, candidates must submit a complete application for admission to the University no later than the deadline of the target semester.
