Offers of Victoria PhD Scholarships will be made approximately six weeks after each closing date in March, July and November of the year of application. Approval may be given for scholarship recipients to undertake paid employment (usually tutoring) for up to a further 400 hours in addition to their contribution in any one calendar year. All requests to undertake part-time employment must be supported in writing by the supervisor.
Once the period of tenure of a scholarship has commenced, the University Scholarships Committee may, at its sole discretion, grant a scholarship recipient a deferment of their scholarship for a period not exceeding one year. In most cases such a deferment will coincide with a formal suspension from their doctoral enrolment.
A scholarship shall be terminated if a scholarship recipient ceases to resume the aforesaid programme of research within one month of the last day of the period of the deferment.

    Conservation Leadership Scholarships

    Two scholarship programmes have been generously established to support students from less developed and developing countries that are rich in biodiversity, to attend the MPhil in Conservation Leadership. TheMiriam Rothschild Scholarship Programme in Conservation Leadership is generously supported by Arcadia. Additional scholarships are available as a result of support from another donor.
    The number and size of the scholarships varies from full scholarships, to partial scholarships that cover specific aspects of the funding package required by students. Offers of scholarships will be made competitively based on: academic quality and the motivation and potential of candidates to become conservation leaders.
    Applying for these scholarships involves a two-stage process. First, applicants should, if they have not already done so, make a formal application to the Graduate Admissions Office for a place on the course. See our Applications page for details of how to do so.
    Second, scholarship applicants should write a financial case explaining the funds that they have available, and any funds that they still require to ensure they can take up a place on the course. This financial case should update any information given in the original application to the Graduate Admissions Office. The financial case should not exceed 200 words. Please note that to be considered for these scholarships, applicants must (i) provide evidence of their current English language status (e.g. an IELTS test result) by the end of March, and (ii) meet the English Language requirement by the end of July in the year they wish to begin the course.

    Other sources of funding

    Applicants are encouraged to seek diverse sources of funding to maximise their chances of success. Many applicants will be eligible to apply for scholarship support from the Cambridge Trusts and/or the Gates Cambridge Scholarships. Applications for these schemes are made as part of the Graduate Admissions process. The deadline to be considered for these scholarships is usually in early December of each year.
    Applicants may be eligible to apply for sources of funding within their home country, such as the British Government Chevening Scholarships.

    UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme

    What is it about?

    Reinforcing its belief in “people building the next era”, the Government of Japan offers 20 fellowships per year, for the twelfth consecutive year, to be awarded to deserving candidates from developing countries, especially the least developed countries (LDCs), who are eager to undertake research on one or more of the topics listed below. The aim of the fellowships is to support innovative and imaginative post-graduate research in four areas of development of particular interest to UNESCO.
    UNESCO designed the project “UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships Programme” (UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme) in the framework of the Japanese Funds-in-Trust for the Capacity-Building of Human Resources which was established in November 2000 by the Government of Japan to enable UNESCO to give impetus to research in four areas under UNESCO’s Priority Programme Areas.

    Objective of the Programme

    The UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships Programme (UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme) funded under the Japanese Funds-in-Trust for the capacity-building of Human Resources will aim, in particular, to impact on capacity-building and research activities in the following areas:
    • Environment (with particular emphasis on water sciences);
    • Intercultural Dialogue;
    • Information and Communication Technologies; and
    • Peaceful conflict resolution.
     No other research topics will be considered.
    DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION REGARDING THE RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH UNDERTAKEN UNDER THIS PROGRAMME

    Once the Fellowship has expired, the beneficiaries will be encouraged to disseminate the results of their research. No prior approval of UNESCO will be required for publication of a scholarly paper resulting from research done while benefiting from the UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme. However, the Fellow will be asked to acknowledge UNESCO, UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme and the Government of Japan in their paper as having provided support for the Fellowship and the Fellow will be required to send a copy of the report and/or printed article to the Organization for information. It should be emphasized that UNESCO has no obligation to publish the scholarly papers and no allowance will be provided for that purpose.
    Selected beneficiaries will be required to submit an interim and a final report describing the results of the research undertaken. Fellows will be required to send UNESCO a one-page summary with their report that will  be disseminated widely by UNESCO.
